Frequently Asked Questions — Ward Code Consulting

Practical code expertise that keeps projects moving. Clear answers, fast turnarounds, and solutions grounded in real-world construction experience.

What We Do

Plan review, inspections, and code consulting for municipalities, contractors, and design teams.

What services does Ward Code Consulting provide?

We provide flexible, on-demand building department and code consulting support: plan review, field inspections, code compliance interpretations, backlog management, and actionable remediation strategies. We focus on practical solutions that reduce delays, minimize rework, and improve communication between contractors, designers, and building departments.

Who do you work with?

Primarily municipalities and building departments needing reliable plan review and inspection capacity (short- or long-term). We also work with contractors, architects, and engineers who want clear, defensible code guidance that’s rooted in field experience — especially on projects that are complex or at risk of delay.

Where do you operate?

We serve the Chicago suburbs through Rockford, IL and nearby communities. If you’re within that corridor, we can usually support you quickly. For projects outside the area, contact us and we’ll discuss options.

Process & Timeline

Clear steps, fast results — designed to unblock projects and keep permits flowing.

What does your plan review process look like?

We perform a focused review against applicable codes and local amendments, identify code issues and potential conflicts with construction practices, and deliver a concise report with: prioritized findings, required corrections, and practical, buildable solutions. Formats: PDF markup, annotated plan sets, or a checklist summary for the building department — whatever your workflow needs.

How do inspections and backlog support work?

We integrate with your permitting workflow: scheduled inspections, partial inspections, or surge coverage to clear backlogs. For municipalities, we can provide on-site inspectors or hybrid (remote + site) solutions. For contractors, we’ll coordinate with the AHJ to ensure inspections are performed efficiently and consistently.

What are typical turnaround times?

Turnaround depends on scope. Typical ranges:

- High-level code consult / quick question: 1–2 business days

- Standard plan review (small projects): 3–7 business days

- Complex plan review or multi-discipline projects: 7–14 business days

For inspections and backlog relief, we’ll align schedules to your needs — from same-week coverage to multi-month contracts.

Why Us

Real construction experience + deep code knowledge = faster, defensible outcomes

What makes Ward Code Consulting different from other consultants?

Two things: (1) Real-world construction experience — we’ve been in the field, performed inspections, and worked with contractors and plan reviewers; and (2) Broad jurisdictional experience — plan review and inspections across 175+ municipalities. That combination means our guidance is technically accurate and practically achievable, reducing disputes and delays.

Which code editions and standards do you use?

We work with the current editions of the major model codes and relevant local amendments (IBC, IECC, IMC, IFC, NFPA standards, etc.) and interpret them in the context of local enforcement practices. Our opinions are documented and defensible for building departments and design teams.

Contracts, Pricing & Risk

Transparent options to match scope — from hourly support to project-based retainers.

How do you price your services?

We offer flexible pricing to match needs:

- Hourly consulting (for quick questions or ad hoc support)

- Flat-fee plan reviews (scope-based, delivered with a clear checklist)

- Time-and-materials or retainer agreements (for backlog relief or multi-week inspection support)

We’ll scope and propose a simple estimate upfront so you know cost, timeline, and deliverables before work begins.

Are you insured and can you work under a municipality contract?

Yes — we carry professional liability and general liability insurance and are experienced working under municipal contract terms and vendor agreements. Contract specifics (insurance limits, indemnity language, or COIs) are handled during onboarding to meet the AHJ’s requirements.

Ward Code Consulting provides practical building code expertise to help municipalities and project teams stay compliant, reduce delays, and keep construction moving efficiently.
